Bethan Weir
Director
Bethan is one of the Directors in the team and has worked with Paul for nearly 9 years. Having previously worked at Historic England, she is known for her solution driven advice which is clear and helps drive projects forward.
Prior to Smith Jenkins, Bethan worked at JLL Heritage for 5 years, after 5 years with Historic England, working in the North East, Yorkshire and London where she spent a number of years as a project co-ordinator, assessing applications for grant-aid and managing a large number of Historic England and Heritage Lottery Fund funded projects. Bethan has a particular interest in heritage at risk and ran a national project working directly with local communities to record the condition of their local historic buildings. This work included the preparation of a substantial bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to implement the programme across the country. As part of her role, Bethan was involved in the management of the national Heritage at Risk programme, undertaking strategic work to help identify sites which were at risk of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.
Bethan is an advocate of the vital role which understanding the history of a site plays in ensuring its sustainable future. One of her key skills lies in extracting information from documentary sources, coupled with on-site analysis of the built fabric in order to fully understand where its significance lies. Her background working with a statutory consultee means that she has a great deal of experience applying this within the legislative framework when considering proposals for change.
Bethan enjoys the wide variety of sites which she has the opportunity to work on, including projects involving a C20th ammunitions factory, 1830s warehouse complex, a department store and multiple military airfields.
